In India, old-age homes, assisted-living residences and home-based elderly-care arrangements support vulnerable adults and seniors who may need urgent help. Care staff in these settings are commonly expected to be able to give first aid and CPR while a doctor or ambulance is reached.

The first-aid requirement

In these settings the care-worker role is built on the full General Duty Assistant (GDA) qualification (HSSC/NSDC, around 460 hours), which embeds first aid as an internal component. A standalone first-aid or CPR certificate is not treated as sufficient on its own for the role — it forms part of, rather than replaces, the full qualification.

A recognised, up-to-date first-aid and CPR certificate is a valuable and expected complement that keeps a carer's emergency-response skills current; it is in addition to the GDA training, not a substitute for it, and should be renewed periodically.
